Tianna Hernandez Chosen Surrey Festival of Dance Provincial Delegate

Congratulations to Tianna Hernandez, who was chosen by the Surrey Festival of Dance to be their Provincial Delegate for Intermediate Modern and Contemporary in Prince George, June 4 to 8, 2006.

The Surrey Festival of Dance is the largest dance competition in B.C. and among the largest anywhere in the world with over 30 thousand dance entries each year from over a hundred dance schools. From over 10 thousand individual dancers, The Surrey Festival of Dance chooses just ELEVEN! dancers to represent the Lower Mainland provincially at the annual BC Provincial Arts Festival. Students from the Caulfield School of dance (up to 3 in one year) have been chosen as delegates to compete at the provincial level every year since the year 2000 and we have had the rare distinction of winning titles in all three dance discipline categories: ballet, tap jazz and musical theatre, and modern and contemporary.

We are very proud of Tainna Hernandez who will represent our school and our region this year.

Performing and Festivals

As a school, we emphasize training over competing. With the demise of the Coquitlam District Music Festival Dance Section this year, we tried two other festivals for the first time. We entered a handful of solos and one group in the Chilliwack Festival and participated a bit more in the Peak invitational. As always we had entries in the Surrey Festival of Dance.

Though we enter barely 5% of our numbers to compete, our school was recognized with many top placings, scholarships, and awards at all three of the competitions we entered. A complete list of festival results appears on this site on our Awards page.

Could we please count on help to set up and clean up for the Christmas party. It takes a lot of people a short time to get this done and hours if there is no help. Thank you. There will be a sign-up sheet in the lobby for volunteers and for bringing goodies to the open-house.

Silent Auction

We hold a silent auction at the Christmas Open House and if you or your company has anything you wish to donate, please contact the office at 469-9366. If you know of a company or individual who you think
might donate to us, please ask at the office for a letter to give them. Thank you. All donations are acknowledged at the auction and in the program at the year-end production. We also welcome display advertising for our year-end production program.

Raffle

In September when you signed up, you purchased a book of ten raffle tickets. These tickets will be available in the week following Remembrance Day for you to pick up at the office. If you wish to sell more tickets, please ask at the office. There are prizes for selling the most tickets and for selling the Grand Prize winning ticket. Remember, all proceeds go to our scholarship fund.

At the Christmas party, we raffle off a gourmet hamper along with other great prizes such as tickets to Ballet B.C. We ask that each family bring a non-perishable, gourmet food item to the studio in the weeks prior to the party. Watch for the box to put your items into. Thank you.

Cori Caulfield Performs at
Dance in Vancouver

Cori Caulfield's entrancing new solo “molt” will be presented in excerpt at a FREE SHOWING as part of Dance in Vancouver at 4:00 PM on November 19, 2005 at the Ferris Studio Theatre on the first floor of the Scotiabank Dance Centre, 677 Davie Street, Vancouver BC.

NB an additional showing for Cori Caulfield's molt has been added on Friday November 18, 2005 at 7:00 PM - 7.30 PM at Dance in Vancouver.

When it premiered in the Firehall Theatre’s Dance Series April 6 to 10, 2005 with the title “fOXYMORONIC”, “molt” received raves:

“A smart, funny, accessible contemporary dance...

“A recognised master of the dance miniature pushes the envelope of the form.... A smart, funny, accessible contemporary dance.... Caulfield’s dance vignettes are consistently strong. And she ends with a stunning set piece, a wire birdcage with trapeze, that descends to the sound of tinkling chimes. Caulfield perches inside, presenting herself in her red feather and sequin mask, the magpie transformed into a pretty girl. But it’s only when the cage lifts... that the perch becomes a swing, and the bird on it a woman, as free as they come...

“[molt] is smart dance theatre...”

Deborah Meyers

The Vancouver Sun, Vancouver BC, April 8, 2005

“ Cori Caulfield… with a lethal combination of kinetic sensuality and academic precision... shakes down classical ballet and documents its parallel course in neutralizing female power... the perfect combination of spectacle and metaphor.”

Penelope Mulligan

Discorder Magazine, Vancouver, BC, May 2005

“... whether untamed and impulsive or subdued and controlled, this magnetic performer treated us to the possibilities of dance.”

Laura Murray

Georgia Straight Newspaper , Vancouver, BC, April 14, 2005

The free showing will include pieces by Science Friction Productions, Sharon Wehner Dance, and Mascall Dance. Hope to see you there!
