CAULFIELD SCHOOL OF DANCE
SPRING 2003 NEWSLETTER

Dear Parents and Students,

The following letter is full of important information and dates so please take the time to read it carefully and record all the necessary dates on your calendar.

THE SHOW

Our show, entitled "Kaleidoscope" will be held at 7:30pm Sunday, May 25, Thursday, May 29 and Friday, May 30 at the Terry Fox Theatre in Port Coquitlam. Performing classes will perform in at least two shows. Please set aside time each day for your children to practice their numbers and note that in the weeks prior to the show, teachers often run classes over time as they put the final polish on their numbers. We thank you in advance for you patience. Our show each year is not a recital, but a production, and as well as having the chance to perform before an audience, your child is treated as a 'star' of a show. As such, performers remain backstage during the show and never appear in costume in the lobby or in the audience. Please note: as per the Student/Parent and School agreement, missing a class or any compulsory rehearsal in the 4 weeks prior to show time may result in exclusion from "Kaleidoscope. If you do not have the "Important Dates" insert page for your handbook please ask Hilary or Alara. This page has dates and times listed for rehearsals, and it is posted in the lobby. The first finale rehearsal is Saturday, May 3 at 9:30am. All performers aged seven and over must attend this practice.

VOLUNTEERING

Those who wish to volunteer to help backstage or in the lobby at the show, please see the sheet in the lobby listing the help we will need. Volunteers will receive orientation in the lobby of the theatre, at the rehearsal on Sunday, May 25.

STAGE MAKE-UP CLASSES

It is important that all performers in all numbers present a uniform look. We will have diagrams in the lobby and a list of make-up required for junior and senior students. You must have your make-up before photo day. Small venue (appropriate for hospital shows and photo shoot) and large venue make-up for the show will be taught at our make-up classes. Our first make-up class was held in March. The next class will be Sunday, April 6 and the last on April 13. Please sign up in the lobby. When you come to the make-up classes it is not essential that you have correct make-up supplies with you, only that you do bring your own make-up and hair supplies. Once you have seen the make-up applied, you will find it easier to purchase your supplies.

PHOTO-SHOOT & COSTUME CHECK

On Sunday, May 4 we will have our photo shoot for all numbers in the show. As we check costumes at the photo shoot, all students are required to attend. Photo times for each number will be posted in the lobby. If you will want individual pictures taken, you must sign up on the sheet in the lobby and pay a non-refundable sitting fee. It is not compulsory to purchase photos, but we ask you not to sign up for individual pictures unless you intend to purchase. Mr. Ken Kajiwara will be taking our photos again this year. Please arrive in your first costume 15 minutes ahead of your time, prepared with your hair and small venue make-up done. If you need help with hair or make-up, please come 1/2 hour before your call time and someone will assist you. Whether you need assistance or not, please bring your own stage make-up and hair supplies.

TICKET SALES

Tickets for the show will be reserved seating and will go on sale at the studio Saturday, May 10, 10:00am to 2:00pm. Please note: ALL FEES MUST BE PAID BEFORE TICKETS ARE PURCHASED. This includes: term fees, costume fees, festival fees, exam fees etc. You will know prior to this date which students are in which show.

FUND-RAISING

Dancers in our Professional Training Programme are planning to attend the B.C. Annual Dance Competition in Prince Rupert in May of this year. The money they have raised with your help will take them there. They thank you very much. At the shows this year we will be running the concession to raise money for our scholarship fund. Please see the lobby for more information.

PROGRAMME ADVERTISING

You can advertise in the "Kaleidoscope" programme. Please drop your business card off with a $35.00 cheque to the office by Saturday, May 3. If you are interested in placing a larger display ad please call the office. All proceeds go to our scholarship fund.

FLOWERS

Each year we sell flowers at our show. If you wish to honour your favourite dancer, bouquets and single roses will be on sale in the theatre lobby. All proceeds will go to the scholarship fund. We thank you for your support.

PERFORMING AND FESTIVALS

At the end of February each year local competitions begin. We place some of our students into competitions at the Coquitlam District Music Festival, at the Surrey Festival of Dance, and this year many of our vocal students have entered the Kiwanis Music Festival. These competitions go on until the first week in May. If you walk down the hall of the studio you will see that we are off to a very good start. At the end of each festival, students are chosen to represent each festival at the Provincial level, and this year at the end of the Coquitlam Festival, we were informed that Crystal Wills has been chosen to attend the B.C. Festival of the Arts (held in Kamloops this year) as their Senior Modern and Contemporary Dance representative. Congratulations, Crystal!!

ROYAL ACADEMY EXAMS

Each year, our school enters students for their R.A.D. ballet and character exams and are assessed by the examiner on an international standard. Each student is given a written statement of his or her performance and successful candidates receive a certificate from the Royal Academy of Dancing in England. Our dates for exams this year will be April 14 and April 15. Times are posted in the lobby. Please note that due to changes in the marking system at the Royal Academy, results are now sent to England before we receive them. This means we could wait as long as a month until we receive our results.

AUDITIONS

Each year the major ballet companies audition across Canada for their summer programmes. This year Shaye Firer has been selected to attend the National Ballet of Canada's summer programme. Congratulations, Shaye!!

LOST AND FOUND

Pleeeeeeeease check our lost and found. Each year it grows more amazing. At the end of the year all remaining articles will go to charity.

Please remember: We still have two weeks of classes following the show. This is a fun and relaxed time for students.
Please remember: Our last day at the studio is Saturday June 14.
Note also: That as some classes have had extra rehearsals without charge, these classes will end on the week of the shows. These classes will be posted in the lobby prior to May 25.

Please remember:
Take everything you need with you for show days as there will not be anyone at the studio on May 25, 29, or 30.

We hope that everyone has enjoyed their year and enjoys the experience of being involved with "kaleidoscope". We take great pride in presenting the accomplishments of our fine students in a high quality production of family entertainment. We thank all the parents for getting their children to classes and rehearsals, supervising practice sessions and making costumes.
