CAULFIELD SCHOOL OF DANCE
FALL 2003 NEWSLETTER
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to another year at Caulfield School of Dance!
We thank all of you affected by schedule adjustments for your patience. To those of you who registered in June we thank you for trying to make life easier for all of us. It is impossible to predict how many students we will have in each level of our ten disciplines. Until we can get everyone to register in June we are vulnerable to schedule shuffling.
Our faculty look forward to instructing your classes. Cori Caulfield, our studio owner teaches senior jazz and modern; Isabel Yuan teaches senior R.A.D. and Chinese Dance; Jennifer Green teaches the junior R.A.D. programme as well as ballet courses, jazz and tap classes; Sommer Thome teaches ballet, jazz, tap and hip hop; Barb Tomasic teaches our musical theatre, drama and private voice classes. Robin (Roby) Caulfield, teaches tap, jazz and ballet technique; Raymond Firer, who not only makes many of our costumes, but is a former South African gymnast and coach, teaches our acrobatics programme; Ken Kajiwara who not only takes our fabulous photos, but teaches our ballroom courses as well. This year student, Sarah Jones, is student teaching with Cori our Creative Dance course. We are very proud of our hard working and accomplished staff. You can read their biographies in the lobby and at our web site www.caulfield.bc.ca .
There are still openings in some courses such as: Creative Dance, Acrobatics, Adult Ballet/Lyrical Jazz, Ballroom, Adult Hip Hop and Adult Tap. Barb also has openings for private voice instruction.
Thank you to all who participated in our summer shows; at Italian Days in Newport Village and the PNE in August and at Ioco Days in September . You all did a wonderful job! Our junior summer schools were full and over-flowing as many new and many regular students attended Miss Jennifer's Dance Samplers. It is so very important to make time to dance during our long summer break. Good for all of you who did so.
Senior dance student Heather Dotto will be competing in Australia in January for the title of World Senior Jazz Champion. Break a Leg, Heather! Crystal Wills auditioned for the Toronto Dance Theatre and for the Ballet B.C. Mentor programme this summer and was accepted to train at both! We were thrilled that she chose the Ballet B.C. programme which means she will continue training with us as well. Congratulations to students Shaye Firer and Tianna Hernandez who auditioned for Ballet B.C. 's "The Nutcracker" and were chosen, and to Chelsea Smith who auditioned and was chosen for the Royal City Musical Theatre's "The Nutcracker". We hope many of our students and parents will go to see these and other productions in our cities over the next year. It is very important to support the arts and to expose your children to the arts and particularly to the art of dance. You never know, you could end up in this world and it would be great to know the government and the public supported you!
In September Barb produced and performed in the inaugural show of her new theatre collective, The Roaring Lion. "The Last Five Years" was a wonderful show. Our congratulations to Barb.
In October, Cori was asked once again to choreograph the Evening of Elegance Fashion Show fundraiser for the Port Moody Arts Centre. Seventeen of our students took part in this wonderful show and we thank them and their parents for getting them to fittings, rehearsals and shows. Thank you for giving to your community.
Cori also performed with Crystal Pite in Pite's "Uncollected Work" in Montreal at the Festival International de Nouvelle Danse, North America's largest festival of contemporary dance. "Uncollected Work" will be performed at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre (the Cultch) November 11th -15th. Cori will then tour Calgary and Edmonton and will be away December 16-21 as she will be Montreal for the shooting of a short documentary about her newest choreography.
The Show
The theme of our year-end production this year will be 'Bugs and Rocks!'. Please note that your 'Important Dates' sheet is attached to this newsletter. Please, Please mark these dates on your calendar for your information, and to avoid conflicts!!!!!!!
Practice Books And Tapes
Just 10 minutes a day set aside to practice can make a world of difference. Keep a notebook to write in your dance steps after class. Please bring in a blank tape, labeled with your name and your class, and teacher\'d5s name and your teacher will make a tape for you. Remember to ask for your tape back. (R.A.D. students will receive a CD with their syllabus music for a $5.00 deposit). Please ask at the office.
Lost and Found
Please check our lost and found for missing articles. We are always amazed at the things never claimed.
Change Room
Please remember that our change room is for changing, warming up and doing homework. It is NOT for eating and drinking (which must be done in the lobby only) or for sitting around. Dancers must always warm up before class . Please tell your children to get in the habit of doing this, so that when they attend auditions, competitions and seminars they will know how to prepare themselves.
Christmas Party
Our annual Christmas Party and Open House will be held at the studio from 1:00pm to 4:00pm on Sunday December 7th. Please plan to attend and bring your family and friends to a fun filled afternoon. We will have a silent auction, entertainment, food and drink and the raffle.
Silent Auction
We hope, each year, to be able to raise all the money needed for our scholarship fund through our raffle and silent auction. Please donate to this painless fundraising if you are able or know of an individual, business or organization who can donate. Thank you.
Please contact the office at 469-9366. All donations are acknowledged at the auction and in the program at the year-end production. Thank you.
Raffle
In September when you signed up, you purchased a book of ten raffle tickets. These tickets will be available in the week following Remembrance Day for you to pick up at the office. If you wish to sell more tickets, please ask at the office. There are prizes for selling the most tickets and for selling the Grand Prize winning ticket. Remember, all proceeds go to our scholarship fund.
At the Christmas party, we raffle off a gourmet hamper along with other great prizes such as tickets to Ballet B.C. We ask that each family bring a non-perishable, gourmet food item to the studio in the weeks prior to the party. Watch for the box to put your items into. Thank you.
Could we please count on help to set up and clean up for the Christmas party. It takes a lot of people a short time to get this done and hours if there is no help. Thank you. There will be a sign-up sheet in the lobby for volunteers and for bringing goodies to the open-house.
Please note: There are no classes Tuesday, November for the Remembrance Day Holiday. The last day of classes before the Christmas Break is Friday, December 19
If you have any questions, at any time, please leave a message at the office or ask Hilary or Alara. We hope your year with us is very enjoyable and successful.
Thank you.
